SKILLED TRADES

Pursuing a skilled trade makes sense
5 reasons why

1. It's a fast track to full-time work.
For students who have an interest in trades careers (or have no interest in or aptitude for a traditional four-year college experience), Opportunity Scholars helps them find their pathway to a job that is rewarding — both financially and personally.

2. Training is no- or low-cost.
Opportunity Scholars supports students financially by paying the upfront costs associated with their training. We also serve as the bridge between students and local employers.

3. It involves hands-on learning.

Hands-on education is fun and satisfying for students who want to become skilled craftsmen after high school. Opportunity Scholars helps students find the right fit. We guide students on which CTE classes will best prepare them and then help place them in a training program, apprenticeship or directly with an employer based on student interest and aptitude.

4. You'll have job security.
Some jobs are more secure than others, and the U.S. is facing a critical shortage of skilled trades workers. Local talent that requires hands-on work will always be in demand.

5. The earning potential is great!

Opportunity Scholars supports the upfront costs for career training that leads to high-wage, high-demand jobs that require little to no classroom time beyond high school. Starting salaries are often $40,000 or more and after 2-3 years' experience can be $60,000 to $100,000.

Skilled careers we support that can take as little as six months before initial employment:

Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
Construction Manager
Electrician
Heavy Equipment Operator
HVAC Technician
Plumber
Welder
